I picked up a $30 water test kit off the shelf at the hardware store and ran it on the exact same tap water I'd already sent off to an accredited laboratory. I wanted a straight answer to a question I get asked a lot: if you skip the lab and just buy the kit, what do you actually learn — and what do you miss?
Here's the honest version, and it surprised me a little: the kit did better than I expected on the basics. It also missed some things by a wide margin, and there's an entire category of things it simply cannot see.
The setup
These are real numbers from a real Pinellas County home — a customer's kitchen tap, not a demo and not a lab curiosity. They're happy for me to share the results; I've left their name and address out of it.
Same tap, same water, two tests:
- The kit — an "H2O OK Plus" drinking water analysis kit, about $30 at the hardware store. Ten items, results in a few minutes on the kitchen counter.
- The lab — a CityCheck Basic panel run by National Testing Laboratories (NTL) out of Michigan, an outside accredited lab. Around forty analytes, results returned on paper with the actual numbers.
One housekeeping note before the numbers. The kit's card reports in ppm; the lab reports in mg/L. In water those are the same unit — a liter of water weighs about a million milligrams, so one milligram in it is one part per million. 1 ppm = 1 mg/L. No math required, and the two columns below compare directly. I've left each one labeled the way its own report prints it.
Where the kit held up
Credit where it's due — this was a better showing than I expected for thirty bucks:
- Hardness — kit said 250 ppm, lab said 230 mg/L. Within about 9%. In Pinellas County hardness is the reading that matters most, and the kit landed it.
- pH — kit said 8. Lab said 8.0. Dead on.
- Alkalinity — kit said 240 ppm, lab said 230 mg/L. Close enough to be useful.
- Lead — kit said negative. Lab confirmed non-detect.
- Nitrate and nitrite — kit said "safe." Lab: non-detect on both.
So if what you want is a rough read on whether your water is hard and whether you've got lead, thirty dollars genuinely buys you that. I'm not going to pretend otherwise.

One trap worth knowing about
Hardness gets reported two different ways, and mixing them up will wreck your conclusion. 250 ppm and 14.6 grains per gallon are the exact same water — the two scales are a factor of 17.1 apart.
So if you glance at a strip chart and read off the wrong scale, you can look at genuinely hard water and convince yourself it's soft. I nearly did it myself on this very card. Whatever number you end up with, make sure you know which scale it's on before you decide anything.
It matters practically, too: a softener is sized off grains per gallon. Get the scale wrong and you don't just misjudge whether you need one — you misjudge how big it has to be.
Where it actually missed
Chlorine. The kit read 3 ppm. The lab measured 0.8 mg/L — off by about four times.
Copper. The kit read 0.6 ppm. The lab measured 0.073 mg/L — off by roughly eight times. Neither number is dangerous; the EPA action level for copper is 1.3 mg/L and this house is nowhere near it. But if you were using that kit to decide whether you had a copper problem, it's pointing you in the wrong direction by a wide margin.
There's a pattern in those two. The kit handled the big, blunt measurements fine — hardness, pH, alkalinity. It's on the trace-level chemistry, the stuff measured in tenths and hundredths, that it drifts high. Which makes sense: you're matching a color on a paper strip by eye.
The lab also did something the kit has no way to do: it split the disinfectant apart. Free chlorine came back non-detect; chloramine came back at 0.8 mg/L. That tells you this water is treated with chloramine, not free chlorine — which matters a great deal if you keep fish, or if someone in the house is on dialysis, and which is exactly what Pinellas County uses most of the year. And one point for the kit
Fair is fair: the kit tested for iron and read 0.3. The CityCheck Basic panel doesn't include iron at all, so I have nothing to check it against.
That's worth knowing for its own sake. No test covers everything — including the good ones. If iron is your specific worry (rust-colored staining in a toilet tank, orange streaks on a white sink, laundry coming out dingy), a basic city-water panel won't answer it, and you'd want to ask for a panel that does. Knowing what a test doesn't cover is half of knowing what you bought.
What the kit can't see at all
This is the part I most want homeowners to understand. The kit tests ten things. The lab measured around forty. Some of what only the lab caught:
- Disinfection byproducts. Total THMs at 0.038 mg/L and haloacetic acids at 0.018 mg/L. Both are comfortably under the EPA limits (0.080 and 0.060) — but they're measurable, and no $30 strip will ever tell you they're there.
- Sodium — 23 mg/L. Worth knowing if you're watching your sodium, and worth knowing before anyone sells you a salt-based softener.
- A real metals panel — aluminum, barium, manganese, uranium and zinc, all non-detect. The kit has no test for any of them.
- Total dissolved solids — 280 mg/L against a 500 limit.
- Plus chloride, sulfate, fluoride, turbidity, silica, strontium and more.
So what was actually wrong with this water?
Honestly? Not much. And I want to say that plainly, because "not much" is rarely the answer you get from someone standing in your kitchen holding a test kit.
- No lead.
- No nitrate or nitrite.
- Disinfection byproducts present, but well under the limits.
- Metals under the limits.
- One thing flagged: hardness, at 230 mg/L.
That's a house worth having a softener conversation about — and not much else. Not a scare. Not a whole-home everything package. One real problem, with a number attached that you can look at yourself.
The bottom line
I went into this expecting to be able to tell you the $30 kit is junk. I can't, and I'm not going to. It got hardness, pH, alkalinity, lead and nitrates close enough to be useful. For thirty dollars, that's real value.
Here's the distinction I'd draw. The kit is a smoke alarm. The lab is the fire inspection.
A smoke alarm is worth having. It's good at telling you "hey, look into this." It is not what you use to decide what to build. And when you're weighing a few thousand dollars of equipment, the gap shows:
- it was off four times on chlorine and eight times on copper
- it's blind to disinfection byproducts, sodium, and most metals — it can't tell you they're there at any level
- and its hardness reading is easy to misread by a factor of 17 if you're on the wrong scale
Use it to decide whether the question is worth asking. Don't use it to answer the question.
